The Thor Guard Lightning Protection System consists of sensors placed within
the village of Barrington that measure electrostatic charges at ground level
and in the atmosphere. When conditions indicate that a lightning occurrence
is probable, a signal is sent to several alarm horns located throughout the
village providing an 8 to 12 minute warning to clear the area and seek
shelter. A visual aid is also included t enhance the horn system. Flashing
strobe lights have been installed at all horn locations. These strobes will
be activated by the warning system and will continue to flash until the
all-clear has sounded.
To minimize the potential for lightning related injuries, it is recommended
that when the warning system is activated (15-second horn blast), the parks
affected are cleared and activity is not resumed until the all-clear signal
is given (3 short blasts). These alarm tones are distinctly different than
any current public alarm tones. It is recommended that park patrons and staff
seek and remain in lightning protected buildings. If such a shelter is not
available, patrons are encouraged to get into their cars, avoid areas that
are higher than the surrounding landscape, stay out from under trees and keep
away from metal objects such as bicycles, golf cart, umbrellas, playground
equipment, etc. If it is the opinion of the park staff, teachers, coach,
referee, or general public that the weather situation is not safe, they will
not wait for the horns to activate; they will clear the area.
The system will be operational from April to November, seven days per week
with varying hours depending on the location of the horn. In order to keep
the entire system operational, all horns will be tested monthly during the
operational season. On the first Wednesday of each month between 1:00pm and
2:00pm, the all-clear signal will be manually activated unless a potentially
dangerous weather situation is approaching.
